What is Acupuncture and Dry Needling?

Acupuncture and Dry Needling are two different types of therapies that involve inserting thin needles into specific points of the body to reduce muscle tension and pain. While they share some similarities, they have different approaches and applications.

In dry needle therapy, thin needles are inserted into certain body areas known as trigger points. These points are small and susceptible spots that cause weakness, tightness, and stiffness in muscles. Dry needling deactivates these pain signals, which as a result encourage muscular relaxation. This method is frequently combined with other physical therapy techniques to reduce muscle pain and tension.

On the other hand, acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that includes the insertion of needles into acupoints, or on specific parts of the body. This method balances the flow of energy and helps in the healing process.

How Does Acupuncture or Dry Needling Work?

How Does Acupuncture or Dry Needling Work?

Researchers are still figuring out the precise workings of Acupuncture and Dry Needling. However, several theories have been put forward which explain them as:

  • Acupuncture: It activates the neurological system, which helps in releasing endorphins, a pain-relieving compound. It also helps in increasing blood flow to the affected area to aid in healing and reduce inflammation.
  • Dry Needling: As thin needles are directly applied to the targeted area, they mechanically loosen up trigger points, which relaxes muscular tension, increases blood flow, and lessens the feeling of pain.

How Acupuncture is Performed?

Acupuncture points are located everywhere in the body. It’s not necessary that the right spots need to be always close to the area where you are experiencing discomfort.

At the Acupuncture Clinic, or Physiotherapy Clinic your therapist will make a detailed assessment of your condition and will inform you about the general location of the planned treatment.

He will also ask you to take off any clothing if required. They will provide you with a sheet or gown for covering and make you lay on the padded table. Furthermore, the procedure involves the following steps:

  • Inserting Needles: Acupuncture needles are inserted into different depths at particular points on your body. These needles are very thin and a few centimeters long. To avoid the risk of infections, these needles are pre-sterilized and are disposed of right away after use. As these needles are finely thin, insertion is usually painless. People frequently don’t sense their insertion at all and only experience some mild irritation. Normally five to twenty needles are used in each therapy session.
  • Manipulation Using Needles: Following insertion, your therapist may gently rotate or adjust the needles, or they may deliver heat or very light electrical pulses as per the requirement of your condition.
  • Removing Needles: The needles are usually left in place for ten to fifteen minutes while you lie still and relaxed. Your therapist gently removes your needles which are usually painless.

You may feel immediate relief in your symptoms or may notice changes after having a few sessions. It varies from patient to patient and the condition being treated.

Acupuncture Safety and Regulation:

In general, acupuncture is a well-tolerated and safe treatment. Like many other medical procedures, sometimes there can be a chance of adverse effects which is usually very low. However,  it is important to select a licensed acupuncturist who is registered with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) or working under any healthcare professional like a doctor, physiotherapist, or nurse, just to ensure that the procedure is performed under safety guidelines and hygienic standards.

Associated Risks:

Every therapy has risks as well as benefits. Always consult your doctor before starting any kind of therapy. Some possible risks of acupuncture can be:

  • Minor bruising or Bleeding
  • Soreness on site of insertion
  • Lightheadedness.
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Increased chance of excess bleeding if you are on anticoagulant drugs

Before undergoing acupuncture therapy, it’s important to discuss with your doctor if you are on blood thinner medication or have any other bleeding disorders such as hemophilia.
